Climate Smart Communities Program Overview
Climate Smart Communities Program: https://climatesmart.ny.gov/
The Climate Smart Communities (CSC) program launched this website as a new way for local governments in New York State to apply to become Certified Climate Smart Communities. This website, known as the certification portal, provides an online platform for local governments to upload documentation, communicate with those who review documentation and track their progress. By providing detailed information about the program and reflecting all recent updates, this portal replaces the CSC Certification Manual, which was issued in 2014.
The CSC program is jointly sponsored by the following six New York State agencies: Department of Environmental Conservation; Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA); Department of Public Service; Department of State; Department of Transportation; and Department of Health.
We have accomplished several items on the attached checklist and are working on many others currently. One thing to keep in mind is that we do not have a dedicated staff person to this so our procedure has been to use this checklist as a guide. For example, our City Hall Elevator project includes a charging station for electric vehicles in the parking lot. We did not add that to the project to achieve points for CSC but rather used the checklist to gather ideas for potential sustainability ideas.
We appreciate the Green Committee doing research and coming up with ideas for us to implement and encourage that to keep happening. We will continue to implement these strategies as we move forward with capital planning and efficient day-to-day operations.
